Also called BRC, Brand Reputation Compliance Global Standards
A GFSI-recognised food safety standard, originally British and now used internationally, common wherever UK and EU retailers are involved.
BRCGS grew out of the British Retail Consortium’s standard for own-brand suppliers and is now one of the main GFSI-benchmarked schemes alongside SQF and FSSC 22000.
Its audits are graded — AA down through A, B, C and D — and the grade is visible to customers, which makes it unusually comparable between sites. Unannounced audits earn a “+” on the grade.
If you sell into UK or European retail, expect BRCGS to be the scheme you are asked about. In North America the same question is usually asked about SQF, and the two are broadly equivalent in weight.
