Co-packers in New Zealand
World-class dairy and a regulatory regime built for export.
Why manufacturing concentrates here
New Zealand’s food manufacturing is dominated by dairy, which is globally significant in scale and technically excellent. Meat, seafood and horticultural processing follow, with general food and beverage manufacturing concentrated around Auckland.
The country’s regulatory system was built for export, which is unusually useful for a brand: the compliance machinery assumes your product will cross a border and is set up accordingly.
The scale is the trade-off. It is a small domestic market, so the co-manufacturing sector is smaller and more specialised than Australia’s, and minimums can be higher for anything outside the core strengths.
What to check before you commit
- A Risk Management Programme is required for animal productsUnder the Animal Products Act, an MPI-registered RMP is mandatory. Confirm the site holds one covering your product.
- MPI, not FSANZ aloneNew Zealand applies the joint Food Standards Code with Australia but administers it through the Ministry for Primary Industries. Verification and registration are local.
- A smaller pool of sitesOutside dairy and meat, there may be only a handful of options for your product. Start the search earlier than you would elsewhere.
